MUFON's Baby: David Jacobs

The L.A. chapter of MUFON will feature David Jacobs on November 15th. It seems MUFON is hell bent on eating itself from within. Changes in personnel, firings of female investigators, bizarre statements from chapter heads, and their relationship with Robert Bigelow, all adds up to an organizational melt down. And now this.

Of all the people in the UFO field to invite to speak, MUFON has chosen David Jacobs. David Jacobs, who has clearly demonstrated he is unethical and sleazy to boot, is the UFO researcher of choice for this "esteemed" organization.

You cannot tell me MUFON is unaware of Jacob's dangerous actions towards Emma Woods. It's as if MUFON is going out of its way to be provocative, as well as irresponsibly glib. Here's what Steve Murillo, L.A. section head of MUFON, wrote back to Emma Woods, who had e-mailed Murillo her concerns about Jacob's upcoming presentation: (italics mine)

Emma,

Your website has a ton of information to go through. It's going to take a while to go through it. Suffice it to say that your remarks here regarding Dr. Jacobs are duly noted. Forgive me if I seem obtuse, but are you a hybrid as well?

Steve Murillo
State Section Director
MUFON LA

Class act, that Murillo. Very classy. Is this what we want from someone in charge of a UFO research organization that promotes itself as being serious? I cannot believe that Murillo, head of the L.A. MUFON chapter, has been unaware of Emma Woods all this time. He implies that it's news to him ("Your website has a ton of information to go through.") as if he's not heard of Emma Woods or her concerns. And if he hasn't (which is very unlikely) where the hell has he been? What kind of MUFON head is that?

David Jacobs has been reinventing himself, at Emma Woods and other witnesses expense, as a psychologist. He is a "Dr." but not of psychology. Yet his new path is one of explaining to the rest of us the "psychology of the abductee" as the MUFON site puts it. L.A. MUFON informs us:

The talk David Jacobs has planned for us will deal with the psychology of the abductees.

Jacobs has since received an advanced psychology degree we don't know about? (No, he hasn't.) Yet he blithely went about performing such psychological type actions with the witnesses who came to him for understanding. For example, planting the suggestion in Emma Woods mind that she had multiple personality disorder. He had no right to implant suggestions into her mind that she has multiple personality disorder. No one, shrink or not, has that right. And it doesn't matter if Emma Woods knew the suggestion would be implanted beforehand.

Aside from all the ugly and unethical actions on Jacob's part, there are the questions concerning the witness and researcher relationship. That is still an issue that is being ignored by most researchers. (Some that are include Carol Rainey. )

Instead of shilling for David Jacobs, MUFON could go in another direction in terms of research. Research which includes the actual witnesses. Or, simply, choosing another UFO researcher altogether.

There are lot of UFO Police about, gatekeepers who want protocols and guidelines and manifestos about the researchers. Who gets to, and what gets to. (Don't like Bigfoot-UFO stories? Ignore 'em!) But what about the researcher and her or his relationship with the witness? It's not all about the researcher. It's a symbiotic relationship, on an equal basis, with witness, event, and researcher.

David Jacobs is MUFON's baby. On the L.A. MUFON site, Jacobs is described as "renowned." It's clear MUFON doesn't give two damns about his choices and behaviors of the past or Emma Woods, but continues to protect those they perceive as beyond criticism.

I am cynical enough to believe that MUFON's mini-infrastructure melt down has been intentional. I don't know how else to explain such behavior.
