:: Destructive Disruptions ::

There was a time when the 9/11 Truth Movement was confined to Internet boards and late night radio programs. These were the days when we looked to movement leaders like Alex Jones for lively debates on this touchy subject.

Lately, however, 9/11 Truthers have been attempting to break into the mainstream. Though unable to garner positive public reception through facts and reason alone, many have resorted to various forms of outrageousness. You probably remember the big Geraldo At Large live broadcast crashing from September. More recently, Truthers have made their presence known at such venues as a taping of Bill Maher's Real Time program and a Bill Clinton speech.

I fear this campaign of public disruption has put an ugly stain on the 9/11 Truth Movement. More and more, I find it difficult to sympathize with the movement when its most vocal supporters are nothing more than thugs. Is this a new wave of punks hijacking the movement? Or are the Truthers finally showing their true colors? In either case, I feel the damage done to what little credibility the movement had will soon be irreparable.

Back in September, I came out in defense of Alex Jones and his supporters when they crashed Geraldo At Large:

Like I said before, I have no problem with protesting--even when it involves such an emotionally charged subject like the 9/11 anniversary--so long as it's done in a tasteful and respectful manner. Once again, it's not like Jones and his supporters were disrupting a funeral or memorial service. I'm not a believer in every conspiracy theory Jones puts forth, but even if you detest the man, his arrest is something that effects all of us. It's one thing to disagree with Jones' message and call out his New York hijinks as dishonorable, but it's another thing entirely to try and an silence his voice. Personally, anyone who stands up for something important has my respect, even if I might not subscribe to their beliefs.

Although I don't think the whole 'disrupt live TV' scheme was the best way to go, it was a public street and there was a valid reason for protesting in New York at the time. However, this latest campaign of disruption appears to me to be nothing but a cheap trick to get publicity no matter the cost. Not only are these public demonstrations getting increasingly disrespectful, they are also ultimately counterproductive.

Credibility has always been an obstacle for any conspiracy theory, but at least this one had favorable public opinion. It wasn't long ago that certain polls were showing in favor of the 9/11 Truth Movement message. The movement had the aura of the underdog, and there's nothing America likes more than an underdog.

Despite a campaign of debunking by the likes of such institutions as Popular Mechanic, Truthers were able to persevere. However, as time passes and fewer Americans are concerned with the events on 9/11, it appears as if the Truth Movement is beginning to grow stale. Now that far too many Americans don't even remember what year we were attacked, even more have grown disinterested in poking holes in the official government account.

With no major development or smoking gun evidence yet to surface, it appears some in the movement have resorted to the juvenile with these public disruptions. In this way, the Truthers are beginning to show signs of desperation while simultaneously driving away a once supportive public. If this trend continues, the 9/11 Truth Movement will go down in history as a movement of crackpottery to be shunned and ridiculed.

For their own sake, I hope the Truthers have come to realize the error of their ways. It may get you more street cred with the YouTube'n Internet generation, but no amount of MySpace comments or PayPal donations will make up for the losing the support of the general public.
